Hand Built V8's

In 1999 Ford Australia together with Tickford Engineering formed Ford Tickford Experience (FTE) to build more exclusive, higher performance Falcons. September 1999 saw the launch of the first T Series vehicles, and with the cars, came the exclusivity of owning a vehicle that had a hand built engine under the hood. This exclusivity however was short lived as Ford Australia introduced these engines into the XR8 Falcons from February 2000 onwards. There were three power levels available for the hand built engines. A 5.0 200kw, a 5.0 220kw and the grand finale for the Windsor, the 5.6 250kw. So which AU Falcon v8 had which engine you ask? The table below is a list of the vehicles fitted with a hand built engine. Please note the dates are production dates and not the release for sale dates.

A few interesting points that some of you might already be aware of. In April 2001 the 220kw engines changed from imported SVO alloy cylinder heads to locally produced cast iron heads. These engines were then introduced into the already in production AUII TE50, AUII TS50 and AUII TL50 as a running change. Interestingly, going on the information I have received, there might only be 2 out of the 12 AUII TL50’s, 8 out of the 47 AUII TS50’s and 38 out of the 141 AUII TE50’s with the cast iron cylinder head 220kw motors fitted to them. The AUIIIXR8 utes never got the 220kw motor like the sedans did, although there have been a few owners of AUIII XR8 utes who have said they have the 220kw engine factory fitted. Only three AUIII TL50’s were built, of which only one was built in 2002. July to be exact. There was a couple of AUII TE50 and TS50 sedans built with the 5.6 250kw motor. Prototypes which were then upgraded and sold off as AUIII’s.
The easiest way of knowing if you have a hand built V8 in your AU is to look at the drivers side rocker cover for a plaque. On the plaque is the name of the Tickford technician who proudly hand assembled the motor prior to it being fitted to the vehicle. I have collected a few photos of these plaques with some names of the various technicians who did such a fantastic job with these motors.

The names on the list above are not verified, just gathered information from Fordforums.com.au members. If you happen to own an AU with a hand built engine that has an engine plaque with one of the names on the list above, please email me a photo of the plaque at least 500 pixels with to augzmk@yahoo.com.au. Also, if you know of any other names, please send me a photo of the plaque to my email address above. Thank you to everyone who sent in photo’s and information, much appreciated. Finally, a big thank you to FTE for making the AU Falcon into something even more special with these engines
